2020 VISION. THE ART EXHIBITION
Six Coast visual and multi media artists with six visions for 2020. Cabinets of Curiosity by Matthew Talbot Kelly, and Re-indigenize by Dionne Paul. Re-imagine the day to day of local working people with Chad and Alysha Sergerie, re-think the beauty of our natural environment with Allan Forest’s colourful photos, re-interpret our world through the evocative digital studies by Kasia Krolikowska and marvel at Gary Sean Loewen’s re-purposing of ephemera in his hand-crafted collage pieces.
DAve Brubeck Centenary concert
We celebrated jazz icon Dave Brubeck’s 100th birthday with this special homage by Dave’s son, Dan Brubeck, an internationally acclaimed jazz drummer and Sunshine Coast resident. Dan teamed up with some of Vancouver’s finest jazz artists; Miles Black (piano), Adam Thomas (bass), and Steve Kaldestad (saxophone). The live show featured video elements originally produced for The Brubeck Brother’s world tour that had to be cancelled due to COVID.
The centenary concert also featured sensational coast singer-songwriter Katherine Penfold for a truly unforgettable evening.
Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY world premier
This world premiere contemporary dance event featured Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY with choreography by Ballet BC’s Kristen Wicklund and international choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, and dancer Reneé Sigouin (Crystal Pite’s Kidd Pivot) in a special presentation of new solos and duets.
This collaboration in isolation included a piece Joshua will choreograph for two Coast emerging student dance artists, Natalie Martin and Francesca Manson. It was a rare opportunity to see international performer Joshua Beamish LIVE on the Sunshine Coast stage and online.
Cool heat
COOL HEAT have been lighting up West Coast stages for over a decade with brilliant fire dancing and juggling. This magical show lit up the night in Hackett Park. Co-produced with our festival friends at Rogue Fest.
Steamship Stories, HERITAGE EXHIBITION
Looking back at Sechelt’s storied maritime past. Since time immemorial, Sechelt and the Sunshine Coast have been home to thousands of Coast Salish First Nation peoples, but the advent of Sechelt’s colonial era brought a melange of new settlers searching for a new life from different parts of the world. The early 1900’s brought the first pioneering families by boat, inspiring the first hotel, grocery store, and post office. The First Nation canoes were the transportation staple along the coast for eons until the steamships arrived bringing a new mode of easy transportation to the Vancouver mainland and Vancouver Island. With them came much needed supplies and goods, tourists, and adventure seekers. The Union Steamship Company dominated the west coast waters until the mid 1950’s.
LADY ROSE COMMUNITY MURAL. Our friends at PAINTILLIO provided a super fun Paint By Number community mural depicting the MV Lady Rose, the last Union Steamship Company ship (built in 1937) and now moored in Porpoise Bay. The finished painting hangs in the Trail Bay Mall.
