ART EXHIBITION

This multi-generational art exhibition was a profound experience for the artists who were invited to share their stories of inspiration, as well as the hundreds of visitors. The vision for this exhibition came from the C-150 storytelling project, and it worked extremely well in that sense. Visitors stopped and read the stories, and then they often re-read them. They gained a richer experience from the storytelling that accompanied each piece than just an appreciation of the visual art, or the craft on display.

syiyaya our families, our stories

Penned especially for the Sechelt Arts Festival by playwright Louise Phillips, the play presented vingettes from Sechelt’s past.

Grease: Tap/flamenco style

Combining tap and flamenco dance company Karen Flamenco along local mime comic actor Gerardo Avila, projected images and set pieces in an adaptation of the popular musical Grease.

Mimosa: visionnaires

Back for a second appearance at the Sechelt Arts Festival, and led by coast favourites Anna Lumiere and Karen Graves, Mimosa took us on a bilingual tour of Canadian Female Songwriters. Accompanied by video compiled specially for the festival by coaster Harmony Thompson, and fronted by the amazing vocals of Rebecca Shoichet, the band sounded its very best in the Raven’s Cry Theatre. Joining them to play their own compositions were coast fiddler Willow Carriere and singer-songwriter Eryn Robertson.

HERITAGE EXHIBITION

This year’s heritage exhibit illustrated families and stories about Sechelt’s multi-cultural settler and indigineous roots through photos, maps, and artifacts. .

family bands

From the ex-pro grandfather who can now only remember how to play when playing with his son and grand-daughters, to the professional music couple who were finally able to convince their teenager that playing with mom and dad might not be so totally uncool, the production provided not only a useful way for these families to come together, but a glimpse of a time gone by when this might have been more the norm.

origin stories

Opened by Andy Johnson sharing a local legend from the shíshálh Nation, participants were then cajoled into and invited to participate in the act of storytelling by masters of the art, Jean-Pierre Makosso, and Green Man, John Conway.

Emerging Artists

Steve Wright of The Sound studio produced another great evening at the shíshálh Nation Hall with popular music performed by a dozen of Sechelt area “emerging” musicians, singers, and songwriters from elementary school to college age. Mieke Jay’s dazzling visuals transformed the hall venue, and the evening delighted a vast range of ages, from the performer’s peers to their grandparents.
